How to Transfer Colleges

When we attend our first day of college, life seems so great and every moment is just so exciting. However, after our first few months, sometimes our expectations for that college just are not met. At this point, you may be considering to transfer to a different college. Here are some tips to help you determine if that is the right decision for you.

Why do you want to transfer?

Compile a list of reason you want to transfer. Compile a list of reason to not transfer. Review these and take night to sleep on your decision to see if you still feel the same by morning. Also take some to reach out to others for a second opinion, including family members, friends, advisors, etc. The transferring process can be long and tedious, so it is best to really take the time to decide if this is the right move.

Do your due-diligence and research your next college

If you decide to move forward with this, then it is time to research your next college…again. Good news is that now you will have some experience to give you insight on what it is you are looking for in a college. Compile a list of what you want and do not want in a college. Compile what you like and do not like about your current college. This will help you to compare and contrast between your new choices.

Setup an appointment with your current advisor

Speak with your advisor. This will be one of the most important step you will be taking to transfer colleges. Your advisor will be able to help you through the process. You will understand which credits to transfer, what forms to fill out, and who else you will need to talk to.

Get ready to fill out applications

Make a list of what you will need for each school you are applying to. This should be relatively easy as you have been through this process once before. At least this time around, you can ask for references from your current or past professors!
